My name is Julia Mitford Child. My dad, Wilf Mitford is a songwriter from the North East of England. I’m a librarian based in Sydney and spent the first 10 years of my library career as a Music Librarian. I’m also a singer, but didn’t managed to get the songwriting / composition gene sadly. Dad has been writing songs since he was a teenager. He started with pop tunes but really made his mark with his folk songs documenting important events in the North East and aspects of daily life. I’ve been keen to type up his songs so that they’re not lost, so figured I would kill two birds with one stone and do it as a blog! I hope you find this journey as interesting as I do.
Mitford Music was the name of our record label when we recorded some of this music as a family band in the 1980s before Dad became too unwell to work and continue his professional music ventures. I’ll talk more about the adventures of ‘Concordia’, ‘The Mitford Family’ and ‘Mitford Music’ as the blog develops so stay tuned.

It’s amazing what you find by accident. I was born in Felling and went to school with your dad! We went to St Aidan’s Grammar School in Sunderland, travelling in the bus together every day. I left in 1967 to go to College and never saw your dad again.
Is he ok? Where does he live now? I’m in Lancashire.

Hi Les,
It’s lovely to hear from you. Thanks for posting here. Sadly Dad passed away in September 2022 unexpectedly. He’d always been in great physical health which made it a bit of a shock, though he had suffered with OCD for many years. He just collapsed one day at home. He was living in Blyth when he died and had been there quite a few years. He spent most of his years in Cramlington where he had me and my sister Pamela.

Hope life is good in Lancashire, I’ve ended up in Sydney though try to get home every couple of years to see the family. COVID made it all a bit difficult and I hadn’t made it back to visit before Dad passed – I had flights booked for the December. He was always very supportive of my life overseas though and we had great chats on the phone, and of course I have all of his songs to keep is memory and legacy alive.
