Julia Mitford is a British folk singer whose musical roots run deep in the traditions of the North East. She began performing as a child with her family band, The Mitford Family, appearing at folk festivals across the region, on television, and on Kathryn Tickell’s Bright Young Things for BBC Radio Newcastle.

In her late teens, Julia broadened her musical interests into jazz and contemporary styles, earning a Higher National Diploma from Newcastle College. She later built a career in librarianship, managing ExploreMusic — the Gateshead Libraries music service based at The Sage Gateshead (now The Glasshouse), the Australian Institute of Music Library and most recently the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Library.

Now back in the UK after seventeen years abroad, Julia has returned to her folk heritage. She performs traditional Geordie and Northumbrian songs alongside material written by her father, Wilf Mitford, whose work is featured throughout this blog
